RDPE Delivery Bodies

Natural England

Natural England is a relatively new public body formed by bringing together English Nature; the landscape, access and recreation elements of the Countryside Agency; and the environmental land management functions of the Rural Development Service.

We work for people, places and nature to conserve and enhance biodiversity, landscapes and wildlife. Our work covers rural, urban, coastal and marine areas. We aim to conserve and enhance the natural environment for:

  • its intrinsic value
  • the wellbeing and enjoyment of people
  • the economic prosperity it brings

We promote access and recreation and contribute to the sustainable management of our natural resources.

To do this we:

  • support individuals and organisations in actions that will benefit the natural environment
  • increase opportunities to make it an enriching part of people’s everyday lives
  • bring together those who influence and shape our environmental future

One NorthEast

One NorthEast is the Regional Development Agency (RDA) for the North of East England. It covers Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, County Durham and Tees Valley. Our vision is a vibrant, self reliant, ambitious and outward looking region promoting the benefits of living, working and doing business in our region.

The 1999 RDAs Act set out a clear responsibility for each RDA to carry out its role in relation to rural as well as urban areas. This was enhanced in 2004 when Defra’s Rural Strategy set out increased rural delivery responsibilities for Regional Development Agencies, including the transfer of key staff and funding from the former Countryside Agency and the Rural Development Service.

From October 2006 the Agency was given the responsibility for managing the socio-economic European Rural Development legacy schemes, as well as the delivery of the socio-economic part of the Rural Development Programme for England from 2007.

Increasing the region’s productivity in the long-term means supporting rural areas and their communities, enabling them to make their full contribution. This cuts across all the agency’s work areas – from enterprise and economic inclusion to regeneration.

The Forestry Commission

The Forestry Commission is the government department responsible for Forestry in Great Britain.  Our Mission is to protect and expand Britain’s woodlands and forests and increase their value to society and the environment.

Managing our own forests, we deliver a wide range of public benefits including the sustainable supply of timber, wildlife habitats, recreation opportunities and a positive contribution to the landscape. Through the provision of information, advice, grants and regulation we encourage the sustainable management of all other woodlands and forests.

Regionally based, we actively work in partnership with a wide range of other organisations, communities and individuals across the North East. Together we promote and deliver the benefits that woodlands can bring.
